About Sequoia Capital

Sequoia Capital is a venture capital firm based in Menlo Park, California. Sequoia is one of the oldest and most prominent venture capital firms in Silicon Valley. It was founded by Don Valentine in 1972 and control of the company was transitioned to Michael Moritz and Doug Leone in the mid-90s. Sequoia has invested in the early stages of companies such as Apple, Google, Youtube, Oracle, Paypal, Stripe and WhatsApp. The company’s portfolio includes companies that fall into a wide range of industries, with a speciality focus in technology, financial services and healthcare.

Sequoia Capital employs a few dozen people, many of whom are former entrepreneurs. As of 2018, they have invested in 240 successful “exits” in which an investment company was either acquired or went public. Along with their main fund, Sequoia manages funds that focus on specific geographic regions, including China, Israel, and India. As of 2016, the firm had 11 investment partners.

Sequoia specializes in early stage investments, including seed funding. Investment size ranges from hundreds of thousands, to tens of millions, depending on the stage and company. In 2016, Sequoia hired its first female investing partner in Jess Lee, former CEO of the social commerce company, Polyvore.
