Anthem is a health insurance company in the United States that is been around since the 1940s. The Anthem name has only been in place since 2014. Before that, the name was Wellpoint Incorporated. They are part of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and are the largest managed healthcare company in that association. They are publicly traded company they can be found on the New York Stock Exchange with headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana. As of 2017, they had approximately 56,000 employees with some of the open positions including actuarial positions, administrative and business support jobs, business development and sales positions, communications and marketing jobs, customer care jobs, digital transformation enablement positions, finance positions, positions in healthcare analytics, human resource jobs, information technology jobs and jobs in metrics and data.
Although one of the companies behind this organization was known as Wellpoint Incorporated for much of its life, Anthem actually started his two different Indianapolis-based companies that provided mutual insurance. One of them was Mutual Hospital Insurance Incorporated and the other was Mutual Medical Insurance Incorporated. They were formed in 1944 and 1946 respectively. They merged into a parent company in the 1970s called Associated Insurance Companies, with the name changing in a merger happening between Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Wellpoint. The previous company of Wellpoint was known as the Blue Cross of California.
Although Anthem just has their main location in Indianapolis, Indiana, there are plenty of doctors offices, hospitals and other facilities around the country that are part of Anthems operations. As far as their financial situation, Anthem reported $90.03 billion in revenue in 2017 and had an operating income of $3.96 billion. They reported their net income as $3.84 billion and had total assets that were valued at $70.54 billion.
