The company was founded on November 11, 1911 by Louis Upton. Upton worked as an insurance salesman and took inspiration from his uncle who owned a machine shop. Lewis tried to start his own business at one point but did not have any success and instead was able to get in a patent to a clothes washer. His uncle helped him add a motor to the design and after a sizable investment by a retail executive the first motor-driven washers were created. This soon became a family business and the whole line of appliances that they offer today is based upon the single product. Today, the company provides small and large appliances of every shape and size.

Whirlpool has nine manufacturing facilities that are located in Iowa, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Ohio, and Massachusetts. They have a number of major brands which include Maytag, KitchenAid, and Gladiator.
