The Good Samaritan Society is a private, not-for-profit organization that provides nursing and healthcare mostly to the elderly. The organizations official name is the Evangelical Lutheran good Samaritan Society, and is the largest nonprofit organization providing senior care and senior services in the United States. They headquarters are located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and there are a number of offices located throughout the United States. The organization has been around for nearly 100 years in operates in more than 250 satellite offices around the country. They also have more than 24,000 employees, with some of the open positions including housekeeping assistance, charge nurses, certified nursing assistants, LPNs, senior living medication aides, food and nutrition assistant and lots of other positions.
The organization was founded by a Lutheran Reverend named August Hoeger. He was a pastor in North Dakota in the early 1920s, and his church was instrumental in helping a child get treatment for poliomyelitis. Donations for the child exceeded what was needed, so the church started helping other people with disabilities by founding the first of Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society. It was Incorporated in North Dakota on September 29, 1922, and the first center opened in Arthur, North Dakota in 1923. The organization grew throughout the first part of the 20th century, making it past the Great Depression, and ending the 1930s with locations in 10 different states. After the organization split into two different sections, the society had approximately 1/3 of the 27 locations.
The good Samaritan organization has locations in about half of the states in the US including Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Hawaii, Texas, Florida, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, Illinois, Colorado and New Mexico. They are a not-for-profit organization with a reported $1.04 billion in revenue as of 2017.
