In 1979, Southwest began traveling to other states for the first time. It wasn't until the 1990s when service to the east and southeast were added to the route. The major cities that Southwest Airlines services include Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, Nashville, San Diego, San Jose, Austin, and Tampa.
