Kongsberg began as a division of Kongsberg Vapenfabrikk in 1957. This was the result of an agreement with Volvo to supply brakes for the manufacturer's trucks. During the 70s, the division would expand to gain factories in Hvittingfoss and Rollag. Eventually, this led to it demerging in 1987 to form its own company. It would go on to buy the automotive division of Teleflex Automotive.

The company turned over a revenue of 991 million EUR in 2013, with a net income of 6.6 million.
