The company originally was called Super Clips. It was opened close to the University of Minnesota campus in 1982. The company grew quickly, with three more salons opening in just a few months, and in 1983, the founders of the company decided to franchise the name. The first franchise salon opened in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, and by 1997 there were more than 1000 Great Clips locations. The company continued to offer franchises and grew exponentially with 3000 Great Clips salons in 2011. The company offers a franchise license, the Great Clips name, as well as training manuals and other materials for franchisees.

Currently there are more than 4100 salons located in North America. The company does not have much of an international presence yet, but there are locations throughout Canada and some of the larger cities there. It is estimated that in Great Clips has over $1 billion in revenue.
