This company started due to a merger between Bristol-Myers and Squibb. The Squibb Company was founded in Brooklyn in 1858 by Edward Robinson Squibb. At the time, they had a great reputation for quality control within the pharmaceutical industry, which was just in its infancy. Bristol-Myers began in 1887. At this time, John Ripley Myers and William McLaren Bristol purchased the Clinton Pharmaceutical Company located in New York and renamed it. Their first product was a laxative mineral salt. The two separate companies merged in 1989 to become Bristol-Myers Squibb. They were awarded the national medal of technology by President Bill Clinton in 1999. Products include a variety of pharmaceuticals and biologics.

The majority of the work for BMS is done within the United States, at the same locations where the companies actually began. Lawrence, New Jersey, is one location and the other is Wallingford, Connecticut. However, they also have offices throughout New York and New Jersey, as well as international locations in Japan, Belgium, Ireland, and India. BMS is a publicly traded company that reported revenue of $21.6 billion for the 2017 fiscal year with revenue per share at $13.21. They also had quarterly revenue growth of 10.9 percent.
