The company began in 1991 when Paul Verrochi attempted to come up with a strategy to consolidate the ambulance industry, modeling it after a strategy that had been successful for Waste Management. Several companies participated in the merger including Regional Ambulance (Alameda and Contra Costa counties, CA), Vanguard Ambulance (Santa Clara County CA), and Buck Ambulance (Portland OR). The company was bought and sold several times with the most recent activity being the sale of AMR to KKR & Co. LP by Envision Healthcare for $2.4 billion. Products and services offered by AMR include specialty transportation for patients with special needs, life support transportation for patients that require monitoring, disaster response, air ambulance services, managed transportation services and on-site services for remote work locations.
American Medical Response serves more than 4000 communities across the United States. There are a few locations around the world as well. AMR is a privately held company that does not publish their exact revenue. The parent company, Global Medical Response, is also a private company that does not publish his information.
